Updating status is a difficult job

filed under: life, the universe and everything — Martin @ 6:03 pm

I’m a lazy person – I don’t want to update my status on Facebook, XING & Co. seperately so I searched for solutions. Here is my provisionally solution:

  1. Reactivated my Twitter account.
  2. Installed Twype on my Desktop PC as well as on my Notebook to update Skype via Twitter.
  3. Installed Twessenger do the same for Microsoft Live Messenger.
  4. Registered for Hellotxt – a service that sends status messages to my accounts at Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.
  5. Installed the Twitter-Tools WordPress plug-in on this blog to include my status updates in the sidebar (see right side).

However, I did not found any solution to update my XING status too. Do you know a solution?

PS: The solution isn’t perfect. A perfect solution would be: I could update all my messengers, social networks etc. via Twitter, because there are a plenty of useful tools for Twitter, e.g. sending tweets from a Firefox plugin without browsing to twitter.com respectively hellotxt.com. However, I did not find any public solution …

Deep Zoom meets Barack Obama

filed under: playing Lego — Sebastian @ 10:16 am

This morning, Martin came across with a cool Silverlight Deep Zoom Application called Deep Zoom Obama.

It was developed by Donovan West for a Silverlight 2 (beta 2) Article Competition. The application shows in an impressive way the power of Silverlight and Deep Zoom, especially the smoothness of the zoom. For those of you who want to try it out: zoom into Barack Obama’s left eye, there you’ll find a picture in high resolution which loads smoothly and almost immediately. Unfortunately you’ll need to have the proper Silverlight 2 (beta 2) client installed to run it on your computer.

For me as a developer the associated blog article was even more interesting. Donovan West describes therein stepwise, how he built his Deep Zoom project. We’ve also been discussing several times, if we should integrate some Deep Zoom feature into our project. Examples like this are very encouraging. I will let you know, as soon as we made a decision.

Until then, hang in there!

Interviewing social network users

filed under: zero degree of separation — Matthias @ 4:24 pm

We want to know how user of social communities think and feel and so we started some interviews of people we know. Here are some impressions of the interviews.

The people were really different. We spoke to “ungeduldige Schnellklicker” (impatient clicker), celebrators and typical anti-user. Some use the social communities to stay in contact with their friends, others organize groups on the platforms, others spent not only an evening with a good glass of wine in the social communities but also socialise secretly during work and others see no sense at all in the social networks. A lot of people are socialised in more than one community and they like it to present themselves in the web. To get a quick contact to their friends is very important for them. A lot of them use instant messaging programs. However the world of the communities seems to be separated in at least two worlds. The people often divided between their friends and their co-workers. To show how pretty and popular they are, they post even half-naked party photos on their profile in the social networks of their friends. However to present themselves potential employers they use more reliable networks. The people want to individualize their profile and to keep control about it.

We really get to know a lot of different types of using the networks, but you can bring it to the fundamental points:

1. Keep it simple. If a social network wants to be successful the network has to offer simple services.

2. Mobile phone numbers and email-adresses changing more quickly than social network profiles. A lot of people are organized in social communities and they really care about at least one profile. Profiles are planned for eternity.

Goodbye and stay tuned

Introduction of myself

filed under: in our own best interest — Matthias @ 1:59 pm

When I started a few days ago at Squirrel one of my first tasks was to introduce myself on the blog. Here we go.

At Squirrel I will write my diploma. The thesis is not defined yet. I think I will write about the “Monetization of Social Communities”. Perhaps I can concretise my thesis to “Monetization of Social Communities through Virtual Goods”. However this I have to discuss with my professor first.

Within the company I will support Martin. I will be responsible for the content and the promotion of the closed beta. It is very exciting for me because everything is new, the work is very creative and the subject is very fascinating. I really appreciate the work and i am excited, whether our closed beta will pass the practical test.

In the next time you will find more posts in here from me because I am working together with Martin. I really looking forward to update you.

Goodbye and stay tuned.

Privacy and the reason for legal content

filed under: life, the universe and everything — Martin @ 9:41 pm

When we pitch our idea, people always asks us one question: why not use YouTube to enrich your personal profile pages? One answer is: because the video may disappear from YouTube because of legal matters (see YouTomb for a list of videos removed for copyright complaint) and you have a black hole in your profile. An US court gave a new answer today: because YouTube must pass all data concerning users who watched illegaly uploaded videos over to Viacom!

What’s new at Squirrel?

filed under: business is an evolving success — Martin @ 6:32 pm

Here are some exciting news from our head quarter in Garching (near the “Atomei” – the nuclear power plant of the Technical University of Munich that looks like a egg):

  1. We lost our business angels: they demanded 50% of the company, we offered much less. The insight from this eposide: always speak to multiple investors at the same time. Now we apply for different governmental support programs and further competitions.
  2. That’s why we spend for example the whole Monday until Midnight to update our business plan for the Gründerwettbewerb “(founder competition”) of the Wirtschaftsministerium (“ministry of economics”) and for the competition of the magazine “Wirtschaftswoche”. Wish us luck!
  3. Our team (see about us) gets bigger: Matthias, he studies media business in Mainz, joins our company as a trainee; André, a computer science student from Aachen, speaker colleague from the BASTA! conference and author for CREATE OR DIE, works for us as a freelancer (for Silverlight development) and will join us in october for a trainee semester; finally, a well experienced marketeer helps us two days a week with our marketing.
  4. The UnternehmerTUM provided us four additional monitors! Yeah! So we can use the monitors of our notebooks in addition to the big ones what makes development and design much more fun! A big thanks to Sebastian from the UnternehmerTUM!

Now, we have full house in our office room: there are only three desks, but six people, six notebooks and five monitors. What a fun!

Have a good time, too!
